The Doggy In The Window

Saw this cute little dog in a shop window of a Chinese furniture shop this afternoon and it reminds me of the song ...

How much is that doggy in the window?
Woof, woof
The one with the waggily tail
Woof, woof
How much is that doggy in the window?
Woof, woof
I do hope that doggy's for sale
Woof, woof

What To Undertake

Quote for the day by Jan Morris, The New York Times, August 30 1985

"Travel seems not just a way of having a good time, but something that every self-respecting citizen ought to undertake, like a high-fibre diet, say, or a deodorant."

I would tend to agree and I never, never travel anywhere without my deo.  But then every self-respecting human being on this planet ought to undertake in some self-indulgent day dreaming and arm chair travelling which doesn't cost a penny and are not so uncommon such as mine - in no particular order - like wanting to own a house with a backyard herb garden and not have a mortgage hanging over my head; drive down from the Alps in my very own silver Beetle Convertible  to the heel of the Italy's boot shaped coastline; give my child a modest education; sip green tea in a Shogun's tea house in Kyoto; have enough money to live a modestly comfortable life but without living a millionaire's lifestyle;  sit with friends, have a laugh, eat good meals and take lots of photos with the latest digital camera; do the Uluru Walk; see my name in the production credits of an Academy Award winning movie; write occasionally in this scrappy blog ... hmmm ... that sum's it all up, I think! Simple and yet some very grand illusions, no harm in just typing them in here for my Spellbinders category.

Driving through Kaziranga National Park, December 2005

Driving down the National Highway ( NH-37) in my home state of Assam, in north-eastern India, during our recent trip in December, we passed through Kaziranga National Park which is one of the oldest parks in the region with one of the largest numbers of the one horned rhino in the sub-continent.

It's a picturesque drive and the road has improved a lot, I was surprised to note. Though one requires thick skinned driving skills to navigate obstacles ( such as a wandering cow or a dog or perhaps a family of ducks  on the road that include weaving in out of the the single lane traffic in order to overtake slow moving traffic ( such as a bullock cart loaded with bamboos ) and at the same time, skillfully avoid oncoming trucks and local buses speeding beyond acceptable limits - as there no speed limits!

Shocking to see this absolute disregard for the environment at the Kanchanjuri viewpoint ( which overlooks a marsh along the highway where rhinos sometimes can be seen grazing ) on NH-37 especially in the Kaziranga Centenary Year 1905-2005 celebrations which was held earlier in the year with much fanfare.

After all the hard work put in for a successful show, it is sad to see this.
